Run an Autopay Setup Campaign

Send every customer who is not on autopay their own link to save a card and switch on automatic payments, with the list staged for review before anything goes out.

Updated September 14, 2026

An autopay setup campaign sends each customer their own link to save a card and turn on automatic payments. It exists for migrations: card details cannot move between payment processors, so everyone has to enroll again, and doing that one link at a time does not scale. At the end you will have a list staged, checked, approved, and sent, and a page that shows who enrolled.

Before you start

  • Stripe connected. Under SettingsBilling. Without it every link opens a page that says you are not taking online payments, and the pre-send checks will stop you.
  • Autopay setup switched on. Under SettingsCustomer Notifications, Autopay setup must have email or SMS enabled.
  • Know your card fee policy. If card fees are passed on, the setup page says so and records exactly what the customer agreed to. The email never states the terms itself.

1. Who & When

Open Sales and BillingCampaigns, choose the Autopay tab, and click New Autopay Setup Campaign.

  1. Pick who should get a link

Four cards, each with a live count of active customers:

    CardWho
Not On AutopayAnyone whose autopay is off, with or without a saved card. The default, and the right choice for a migration
No Card Saved YetThe cold list. They go through the full setup
Card Saved, Autopay OffWarm. One tap for them
Everyone, Including EnrolledFor a re-consent drive only. Otherwise it nags people who already did this

Only Customers With An Active Agreement keeps it to recurring work, where autopay pays off most.

  2. Read where things stand

Where Things Stand counts customers not on autopay, on autopay, and whether online payments are ready. If Stripe is not connected, a red note says so here rather than after you build.

  3. Name it

The name auto-fills as Autopay setup · Sep 2026 and stops changing once you type.

2. Which Customers

The banner at the top shows how many setup links will send and updates as you change anything. Customers narrows by list, customer type, work type agreement, tags, exclude-tags, and years. Hand-Pick Customers narrows further, and Recipient Cap stops after that many customers, alphabetically; the rest are skipped on the roster where you can include them by hand.

3. Email & Text

Pick Email, Text Message, or both. Both respect Customer Notifications, texting quiet hours, and opt-outs. A customer with no email still gets a text when texting is on.

For email, leave Subject and Message blank for the standard message, or write your own. The button with the customer's own link is always added. Send Me A Test delivers it to your inbox with a dead link, so nobody can enroll from it.

4. Review & Build

Four cards summarize the campaign with Edit links back to each step. Choose Send Emails To and when the batch goes out, then click Build Customer Roster. Nothing sends yet.

5. Review the roster

FlagMeaningCounts under Needs Attention
Already On AutopayOnly reached when you picked EveryoneYes
Emailed RecentlyA setup link reached them in the last 14 daysYes
Card On FileA card is saved; autopay is offNo
No Active AgreementNothing recurring to pay for yetNo
Text OnlyNo email on file; the text is the whole messageNo

Exclude rows one at a time or in bulk, then click Review & Approve for the pre-send checks. Stripe not connected and every channel off are blockers; the rest are warnings you can read and pass. Approve, and the batch sends on approval or at the time you chose. Each customer's link is minted at that moment.

Verify it worked

Open the campaign. How Customers Responded counts who enrolled, who opened the link without finishing, and who has not acted yet. The roster shows the same per customer, and Export CSV takes the whole list to a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

Does building a campaign send anything?

No. Build Customer Roster lists every customer the campaign would reach and stages them for you. Nothing reaches a customer until you click Approve on the roster and pass the pre-send checks.

Is the link the same for everyone?

No. Each customer gets their own link, minted when the campaign sends. Sending again gives them a fresh link and the old one stops working. The test email carries a dead link on purpose.

Why does the default leave out customers already on autopay?

Because the common mistake with this campaign is nagging people who already did the thing you are asking for. Pick Everyone, Including Enrolled only for a re-consent drive, for example after changing your card fee policy. Those rows are flagged Already On Autopay.

What does Card On File mean on the roster?

The customer already saved a card but autopay is off. Their link is a one-tap switch-on.

Can I text the link?

Yes. Turn on Text Message on the Email & Text step. Texts use your Customer Notifications template with the link added, and respect texting quiet hours and opt-outs. A customer with no email still gets a text.

How do I know who enrolled?

Open the campaign after it sends. How Customers Responded counts who switched autopay on after the send and who opened the link without finishing.
