Pest Control Work Types
What each pest control work type is for, which ones are on by default, how to turn on the optional ones, and why each program is its own Service Agreement.
Updated October 9, 2026
Pest Control gives you one work type per program, not one per service. A pest company sells dozens of services — initial service, quarterly, bi-monthly, re-service, bait monitoring, bond renewal — but they fall into a handful of programs that differ in the things a work type controls: the Service Agreement term, the visit schedule, whether a licensed applicator is required, the fields a technician fills in, and which technicians may be assigned. Everything finer than that lives below the work type, in your price list, agreement templates, Care Schedule tasks and the pick-lists on the visit.
The work types
| Work type | What it is for | On by default | Needs a Service Agreement |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Pest | The recurring plan — quarterly, bi-monthly or monthly. The initial service is the first visit. | Yes | Yes |
| Rodent Program | Exterior bait-station and trap programs serviced on a cycle. | Yes | Yes |
| Mosquito | The seasonal barrier program, plus one-time event treatments. | Yes | Yes |
| Termite | Liquid treatment, bait system install and monitoring, and the annual bond inspection. | Yes | Yes |
| Service Call | A re-service under a plan, or a one-time visit — bed bugs, stinging insects, wildlife. | Yes | No |
| WDI Inspection | The wood-destroying insect inspection and report for a real-estate transaction. | No | No |
| Special Project | Quoted one-off work — exclusion, attic insulation, fumigation prep, moisture control. | No | No |
| Estimate | A quote-only visit; the technician builds the quote on site. | No | No |
Each one is listed under SettingsWork Types, where you can change its label, visit length, schedule, billing modes and photo rules. The defaults below are what a new Pest Control account starts with.
General Pest
The plan most customers are on. It recurs every 3 months by default and OpsVara recommends the next visit to the office rather than creating it; change the interval to 2 months or 1 month for bi-monthly and monthly plans. The agreement term defaults to Ongoing (Seasonal and Annual are also offered), and billing defaults to per visit with monthly billing available. Every visit records Target Pests, Areas Treated, Activity Level and Conducive Conditions, and the products used go in the Products Applied section.
Rodent Program
Bait stations and traps serviced every month. The term defaults to Ongoing (Annual is offered) and billing defaults to monthly, because a station program is sold as a flat monthly fee more often than per visit. On top of the shared pest fields the visit records Stations Serviced and Bait Consumed (None, Some, Most, All) — the bait take is your measure of activity between visits. Track the stations themselves per property under DirectoriesEquipment.
Mosquito
A barrier program every 3 weeks through the warm months. The term defaults to Seasonal, running April 15 to October 15; Ongoing is offered for year-round climates. Billing defaults to per visit. The visit adds Breeding Sites Found so the technician can note standing water and clogged gutters for the customer.
Termite
Liquid treatments, bait system installs and monitoring, spot treatments, pre-treats for new construction, and the annual bond renewal inspection. The schedule is every 12 months with no automatic recommendations — termite work is booked by the office. The term defaults to Annual (Ongoing is offered) and billing is per visit. Treatment Type is required on every visit (Liquid Treatment, Bait System Install, Bait Monitoring, Spot Treatment, Bond Renewal Inspection, Pre-Treat (New Construction)), with Linear Feet Treated, Stations Installed / Checked and Evidence Found alongside it.
Termite visits need before and after photos
Termite is the one default-on work type that requires pre-treatment and post-completion photos at checkout. A technician cannot complete the visit without them. Turn that off per work type under SettingsWork Types if your state does not require it.
Service Call
Everything that is not a scheduled plan visit: a re-service between visits, a customer callback, an inspection, or one-time work such as bed bugs, stinging insects and wildlife. It needs no agreement. When you create one as a one-off job you pick a reason — Re-service (covered by plan), Initial service, Customer callback or Inspection only — and billing defaults to No charge, since most service calls are covered by the plan. Change it to per visit on the job for billable one-time work. Reason for Visit is required, and the visit asks for a completion photo.
WDI Inspection (optional)
The wood-destroying insect report a buyer, lender or closing attorney asks for. It ships off because many companies do not issue them. It needs no agreement, bills per visit, requires before photos (they are the evidence behind the report), and asks for Evidence Found (required), Areas Inspected, Inaccessible Areas, Moisture Conditions and the Report Form used (NPMA-33, State Form or Company Form). OpsVara records the inspection; it does not produce the state form itself.
Special Project (optional)
Quoted one-off project work: exclusion, attic insulation, fumigation prep, moisture control. Four hours by default, before and after photos required, Project Phase required (Consultation, Installation, Walkthrough, Other / One-Off) plus a Project Type. It is the one pest work type that does not require a licensed applicator.
Estimate (optional)
The quote-only visit shared by every industry. Enable it when technicians build quotes on site rather than the office sending them.
Turning on the optional work types
WDI Inspection, Special Project and Estimate start off. To enable one:
Open Settings → Work Types
Go to SettingsWork Types and scroll to Available work types at the bottom. The section reads: "Optional work types your business can turn on. Off by default — enabling one adds it to scheduling, dispatch, and quotes across the app."
Click Enable on the work type
It moves into your active list and appears on the New Job form, the Schedule legend, quotes and the mobile app. Disable puts it back.
Give your technicians the work type
Under SettingsTeam, add the new work type to each technician who should receive those jobs. Dispatch never assigns a job to someone whose work types do not include it.
Licensed applicators
General Pest, Rodent Program, Mosquito, Termite, Service Call and WDI Inspection all ship with Requires a licensed applicator on. A job of those types cannot be assigned to a crew with no licensed applicator on it. Tick Licensed applicator on each qualified technician under SettingsTeam, and clear the requirement on a work type under SettingsWork Types if your state does not need it for that work. OpsVara holds one licence flag per technician; it does not track licence categories.
One program, one Service Agreement
General Pest, Rodent Program, Mosquito and Termite each require a Service Agreement before a scheduled visit can be created, and each agreement belongs to exactly one work type. A home that buys all three of General Pest, Mosquito and Termite therefore holds three agreements, each with its own term, schedule, billing and renewal — a quarterly Ongoing plan next to a Seasonal mosquito program next to an Annual termite bond. Because the agreements are on different work types, OpsVara does not treat the second or third one as a duplicate, each renews on its own cadence, and a re-service attaches to the right one.
Open Sales and BillingContracts to see every agreement on a property, and Schedule to see the visits — each enabled work type gets its own colour on the calendar and in the legend.
Adding a program to an existing customer
Quote the new program on its own, with its own work type. Approving the quote creates the second agreement on the same property; nothing on the first agreement changes.
The Pest Control care pack
The Care Schedule lets you attach periodic add-on tasks to a plan and work the due ones from Office Ops. Pest Control starts with a Pest Control starter pack under SettingsCare Schedule:
| Task | Work type it creates | Every | Default price | Approval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annual Termite Inspection | Termite | 12 months | $150 | Asked each time |
| Rodent Bait-Station Servicing | Rodent Program | 2 months | $60 | Pre-approved |
| Mosquito-Season Program | Mosquito | 12 months | $110 | Asked each time — an office reminder, not an automatic job |
Because every task points at a work type that is on by default, a due task can create the job without any further setup. Quarterly perimeter service is not a care task: that is the General Pest plan itself. How to apply the pack, attach tasks to plans and work the due list is in Set Up Care Schedule.
Verify it worked
- SettingsWork Types lists General Pest, Rodent Program, Mosquito, Termite and Service Call, with WDI Inspection, Special Project and Estimate under Available work types.
- A new General Pest job on a property with no agreement asks for one; a Service Call does not.
- A technician without Licensed applicator cannot be assigned a Termite job.
- The Schedule legend shows one colour per enabled work type.
Frequently asked questions
A customer on General Pest wants mosquito service too. Do I edit their agreement?
No. Create a second Service Agreement on the same property with the Mosquito work type. Each program is its own agreement with its own term, schedule and billing, so the two never collide and each renews on its own.
Why can I not assign a Termite job to a new technician?
Termite requires a licensed applicator on the crew. Tick Licensed applicator on that technician under Settings → Team, or assign someone who already has it.
Where is the initial service?
Under a plan it is simply the first General Pest visit. For a one-time initial service with no plan, create a Service Call and pick the reason Initial service.
Do I have to turn on WDI Inspection?
Only if you issue wood-destroying insect reports. It ships off. Enable it under Settings → Work Types in the Available work types section.
